Education A full-shift personal sample collected outside the sandblaster’s helmet indicated that the potential exposure to respirable crystalline silica was greater than 200 times the NIOSH REL of 50 µg/m3 [NIOSH 1974b]. The type of respirator worn during this blasting operation had an assigned protection factor (APF) of 25 [NIOSH 1987b]. The APF, which is discussed further in the section on respiratory protection (p. 9), is the minimum anticipated protection provided by a properly functioning respirator or class of respirators to a given percentage of properly fitted and trained users. Thus, wearing a respirator with an APF of 25 would theoretically provide adequate protection from hazardous concentrations up to 25 times the NIOSH REL–far less protection than needed for a potential exposure greater than 200 times the REL.
